Boundaries are land-clipped — OSM maps these units to their maritime extent, so the coastline here is the land edge and not the administrative sea boundary. Simplified at 0.001 deg (~111 m) for display: not for legal-boundary work and not for high-precision area work (land_area_km2 is carried so nobody measures it off these polygons). The parent province is assigned spatially and recorded as bps_province_name; the kabupaten-level code tags carried here are sparse OSM metadata of mixed vintage, so joins against statistical data should use names, not codes. Names are not all unique: osm_name, the raw OSM name tag, collides for 11 pairs that name both a kabupaten and a kota (Tegal, Sorong, Kupang and eight more), and 26 collide once the Kabupaten/Kota prefix is stripped. kab_kota_name keeps that prefix and is distinct across all 514 — join on it, and carry kind alongside so the pair stays legible. The kind split is 416 kabupaten + 98 kota, the published national figure: OSM's own tags yield 418 + 96, because it labels Langsa and Subulussalam official_name="Kabupaten …" while BPS classifies both as kota, and those two are corrected here on BPS authority (resolved 2026-08-05).Asal-usul data

Overpass relation query for Indonesia's admin_level=5 boundaries — 515 returned, 1 excluded as a desa mistagged admin_level=5. Each relation's ways assembled into rings, clipped to land against the OSM coastline land polygons, then simplified with Douglas-Peucker at 0.001 deg (~111 m) for display. Parent province assigned spatially, not from a code: each unit's point-on-surface tested for containment in the full-resolution 38-province polygons, recorded as bps_province_name with province_assignment. Properties keep OSM identity (osm_name, osm_official_name, osm_relation_id), the resolved kab_kota_name and the name_source it came from, kind, the sparse OSM code tags (osm_ref, osm_ref_id_bps, osm_ref_id_kemendagri, osm_ref_kemendagri, osm_ref_other), land_area_km2 measured off the clipped geometry, and build_notes — the per-feature assembly remark, null for 492 of the 514. kab_kota_name and kind are DERIVED from OSM's tags by a documented ladder, not copied from a single field, and name_source records which rung decided each feature. Two features are corrected against BPS rather than derived: Langsa and Subulussalam, both in Aceh, which OSM tags official_name="Kabupaten …" but BPS classifies as kota. They carry name_source "BPS override" and are the only place OSM's own tags are overruled; osm_official_name still records the OSM tag verbatim.
