38 provinces: the current administrative map, including the Papua splits that the 2020 COD-AB ADM1 layer predates. Boundaries are land-clipped — OSM province relations extend to maritime limits, so the coastline here is the land edge and not the administrative sea boundary. Simplified for display: not for legal-boundary work or high-precision area use. Two provincial code systems exist in Indonesia and they conflict for the Papua provinces — bps_code and kdppum_code disagree on all six — so joins against statistical data should use the name field.Provenance

Transformation
Overpass relation query for Indonesia's admin_level=4 boundaries; each relation's ways assembled into rings and clipped to land, then simplified for display. Properties keep OSM identity (osm_name, osm_relation_id), both Indonesian province code systems (bps_code, kdppum_code), iso3166_2, land_area_km2 measured off the clipped geometry, and build_notes — the per-feature assembly remark, null for 36 of the 38.
